Circle of Life

This March, the Flying Longhorns jetted to Southern Africa to explore its rich history, culture, and nature. They visited Nelson Mandela’s prison cell, traveled by train through the changing landscapes of South Africa, and soaked in vibrant sunsets in Zimbabwe and Botswana. But perhaps the most moving part of the trip was being on safari, mere feet away from wildlife. Texas Exes associate creative director Melissa Reese illustrated her encounters with some of these majestic and fascinating, strange creatures. “I was struck by the sheer size of these creatures, their innate gracefulness, and the beautifully designed interdependence that makes their world go round,” Reese says. “These animals are awesome, and they have some really cool, weird, and surprising behaviors.” —Words by Alex Vickery; illustrations by Melissa Reese
